They can be made of cityscapes, fantasy elements, nature or portraits. Most people don't want to pay to have an artist paint a mural on the wall, but even a novice painter can paint a mural. This will cost a fraction of what a professional would charge and makes the work more personal. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an image that you want to use for a mural. The most affordable images will have large shapes and use few colors. This will be less time-consuming to paint and you won't have to buy so many different paint colors. Silhouettes make good murals because you can choose one color for the silhouette and another for the background.

    • 2

Print your image on a piece of transparency paper. This can be done on your home printer if it is compatible with transparency paper, or you can do this for a small fee at a print shop.

    • 3

Set up an overhead projector on a table at the opposite end of the room from where you want the mural to go. Put your transparency on the projector and adjust the settings until the image on the far wall is how you want the mural to look. Overhead projectors can be rented for a small fee, or you may know someone from whom you can borrow one.

    • 4

Draw the image on the wall, following the lines in the projected image. Use a light hand but be sure that you can see the pencil once the projector is off.

    • 5

Turn the projector off and use your paints to paint in the mural. Use larger brushes for filling in the background and large areas of color, and smaller brushes for details. Refer to the original image for ideas on how to use color.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use acrylic paints for small details and wall paints for covering large areas like background colors.

  • Buy high quality paintbrushes. Cheaper brushes lose their bristles.
