How to Remove Hot Water From a Boiler

How to Remove Hot Water From a Boiler thumbnail
Boilers provide heat for baseboard heating systems.

Many homes use radiators or a baseboard heating system to provide heat throughout the home. This is a system in which a boiler heats water, then distributes the hot water throughout the house in pipes, where the heat is diffused from the water into the air. The cool water then returns to the boiler to be reheated and begin the process again. Occasionally, the water needs to be drained from the boiler for maintenance. This is a fairly easy thing to do, but you must take care not to scald yourself with the hot water. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the power source to the boiler. If possible, allow time for the water to cool some before you drain the tank.

    • 2

Turn off the pumps, if your boiler has one.

    • 3

Close the hot water outlet valves and cold water inlet valves.

    • 4

Attach a garden hose to the drain valve, which is located near the bottom of the tank. Place the other end of the hose in a large bucket or near a drain.

    • 5

Open the drain valve and allow the water to drain out of the boiler. If you're emptying it into a bucket, shut the drain valve off when the bucket fills, empty the bucket, and drain more water from the boiler. Be careful when doing this so you don't get scalded by the water.
