How to Adjust the Air and Fuel Mixture on an Edelbrock Carburetor

The Edlebrock carburetor is a fairly easy system to adjust, with two adjustment mixture screws in the front of the carburetor barrel. You can adjust the carburetor in just a few minutes with a couple of tools. The optimum RPM's for the carburetor are between 1500 and 1600, and you can measure the RPM's with a vacuum gauge during adjustment. Maintaining the carburetor adjustment yourself will not only save you money, but help your engine to run more efficiently.

Instructions

    • 1

Unfasten the wingnut on the top of the air cleaner by hand and remove the cleaner from the top of the Edelbrock carburetor. Set the air cleaner out of the way and locate the two adjustment screws in the front of the carburetor barrel, below the nameplate.

    • 2

Start the motor of your car and turn the adjustment screw on the left (air mixture screw) counterclockwise with a standard screwdriver until it is open completely. Do not turn it so far that the screw falls out of the carburetor.

    • 3

Adjust the screw on the right (fuel mixture screw) by turning it clockwise with a standard screwdriver until it is completely shut. Do not overtighten the screw. Just tighten it enough that you feel some resistance.

    • 4

Turn the fuel mixture screw on the right five half turns counterclockwise with a standard screwdriver and turn the air mixture screw on the left five half turns clockwise with the standard screwdriver.

    • 5

Remove the rubber vacuum hose at the bottom of the carburetor and attach a vacuum gauge to the vacuum port at the bottom of the carburetor. Alternate back and forth, turning the adjustment screws a half turn at a time, until the vacuum gauge reads between 1500 and 1600 RPM's for both adjustment screws.

    • 6

Disconnect the vacuum gauge and reattach the rubber vacuum hose to the vacuum port. Fasten the air cleaner onto the top of the Edelbrock carburetor and turn off the motor.
