1992 Ford Ranger Clutch Installation

1992 Ford Ranger Clutch Installation thumbnail
The clutch slave cylinder transforms foot pressure into hydraulic pressure.

The clutch slave cylinder in your 1992 Ford Ranger converts the pressure your foot creates through foot pedal pressure to hydraulic pressure. This hydraulic pressure is then used to shift gears in the transmission. If you notice a soft, spongy response when pressing the clutch down, this is a sign that the clutch slave cylinder is going bad and needs immediate attention. If you allow this condition to continue for an extended period of time, you will eventually lose the ability to shift gears and operate the vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet and socket
  • Transmission jack
  • Transmission hoist
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Wheel chocks
  • Clutch coupling tool
  • Torque wrench

Instructions

    • 1

Set chocks under the wheels, then disconnect the negative battery cable using a ratchet and socket. Remove the connecting bolt from the clutch pedal and master cylinder using a ratchet and socket, then allow the transmission to rest upon a transmission jack.

    • 2

Unbolt the engine-to-transmission mounting bolts using a ratchet and socket, then unbolt the transmission housing from the crossmember.

    • 3

Release the transmission jack slightly, then detach the clutch housing from the locating dowels by hand. Pry the clutch coupling from the transmission by applying the clutch coupling tool over the white the sleeve that joins the clutch coupling to the transmission. Pull the clutch coupling and the attached tube away from the transmission, then remove the transmission assembly using a hoist.

    • 4

Unbolt the clutch slave cylinder from the transmission using a ratchet and socket, then pull the clutch slave cylinder from the transmission input shaft.

    • 5

Install the new clutch slave cylinder onto the transmission input shaft, and align it so that the bleed screws and coupling face the left side of the engine firewall. Bolt the clutch slave cylinder to the transmission using a ratchet and socket, then torque the bolts to 16 foot-pounds of pressure using a torque wrench.

    • 6

Reinstall the transmission, then reattach the clutch coupling and tube to the transmission. Reattach the transmission housing to the crossmember, as well as the transmission to the engine using a ratchet and socket. Reconnect the clutch pedal to the master cylinder using a ratchet and socket.

    • 7

Connect plastic tubing to the slave cylinder's bleed screw, then loosen the bleed screw using a Phillips screwdriver. Add brake fluid to the master cylinder, then climb into the cab and prime the clutch pedal until brake fluid flows from the tube. Fasten the bleed screw, then remove the tubing.
