How to Remove Wave Soldering Flux

How to Remove Wave Soldering Flux thumbnail
Wave solder flux residue can be easily removed after the soldering process.

Soldering electronic assemblies with a wave solder technique can pose many problems, including excess flux residue buildup. In the soldering process, flux acts an a de-oxidation agent between the base and filler materials, as well as allowing the solder to flow smoothly when melted. Wave soldering flux, however, can easily build up around solder joints on a printed circuit board and should be removed.

Things You'll Need

  • Shop light
  • Wide plastic tray
  • Commercial solder flux remover solution
  • Latex gloves
  • Electronics nylon bristled brush
  • Commercial electronics wash solution

Instructions

  1. Dissolving the Wave Solder Flux

    • 1

Locate flux residue buildup with the shop light. Inspect the electronics assembly for the residue's dark black or brown spots at each solder joint.

    • 2

Place the electronics assembly into the wide plastic tray and apply the commercial flux remover solution directly to the residue. Use the latex gloves for added safety as these solutions are dangerous to the touch.

    • 3

Scrub stubborn residue off with the nylon bristled electronics brush. Take care to scrub only the residue locations, avoid the delicate electronic components.

    Rinsing the Wave Solder Flux

    • 4

Hold the electronics assembly over the wide plastic bin.

    • 5

Apply the commercial electronics wash solution directly to the entire electronics assembly. This rinse will remove any remaining, dissolved flux residue.

    • 6

Inspect the electronics assembly with the shop light, confirming the flux removal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wash solution must quickly be applied directly after the flux reside has been dissolved by the remover solution to avoid residue reattachment.

  • Commercially available flux removal solutions and electronics washes must be handled with care and disposed of responsibly in adherence to your city's codes.
