How to Finish a Walnut Log Mantel
A walnut log mantel is a beautiful focal point for a fireplace. Walnut is a hard surface with a dark brown/purple color. The grain is open, with small pores. The finish on your log mantel should be clear to showcase the natural beauty of the wood.
Things You'll Need
- Fine-grit sandpaper
- Tack cloth
- Wood-penetrating oil
- 600-grit wet/dry sandpaper
- Finishing wax
- Clean rag

Sand the log mantel with fine-grit sandpaper, working in the direction of the wood grain until the surface is completely smooth.

Wipe the log mantel with a tack cloth to remove sanding dust.

Apply enough penetrating oil to the log mantel to keep the sandpaper wet while you sand the oil into the wood with 600-grit wet/dry sandpaper. Always sand with the grain. Continue until the entire exposed surface has been finished with the oil. Allow the oil to finish drying for one week.

Apply finishing wax to a clean rag, and buff the mantel in a circular motion until the desired sheen is achieved. Allow the wax to dry for 72 hours before you use the mantel for display.
