How to Recycle Plastic Film Roll Scraps
Old 35mm film scraps are made of a special plastic that is treated with chemicals, allowing images to form on the exposed film. If you have a batch of old film or film scraps and do not want to throw them into a landfill, you have options. The film is recyclable and special centers accept the film for the process. Separate the film from the other recyclable plastics in your bin. Place it in a separate bin or bag. Contact your local recycling center and ask for the scheduled drop-off dates for photographic scraps.

Contact local scrap and salvage companies as they often offer money for the scrap film, whether it is chemically treated or not. For example, the Plastic Crap center in Phoenix pays for the film scraps if brought in upon the company's requirements.

Package the film according to the center's rules and drop off for recycling.

Call specialized return centers for silver-treated films and micro-tapes. Special return-recycling companies accept VHS tapes, cassette film, movie film, Litho film and old X-Ray film. A good way to locate these services is to contact local hospitals and ask if they recycle X-ray film, then ask who they ship the film to. Get the company name and contact for information on how to recycle your film.

Tips & Warnings
The plastic canisters used to hold the film are recyclable too. Place them in the same bin as milk jugs.
