Chess is a 1500-year-old board game that has simple rules but requires complex strategy. Over the years there have been countless chessboards, with many variations of the 32 required pieces. Chessboards vary greatly in price. With an Internet connection, a few materials and an hour or less of your time, you can create your own chessboard out of paper.
Things You'll Need
- White sheet of paper
- Black pen
- Internet connection
- Scotch tape
Draw an eight-by-eight grid on a sheet of paper. Fill in every other square with black ink.
Create the chess pieces by clicking the chess assembly link in the resources section. Print pages 10 through 12 of the template. These pages have the designs for each chess piece.
Cut out, fold and paste the chess pieces from the template. Make sure that there are eight pawns, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, one queen and one king for each player.
Place each piece in its proper position on the chessboard. From the player's point of view, the knights should occupy the second-most outside squares. The bishops should surround the king and queen, who are positioned in the middle two squares of the chessboard. The white player should position his king in the white middle square. The black player should position her king in the dark middle square.
