How to Hook Up an Electric Fuel Pump on a Johnson Outboard

The electric fuel pump on a Johnson outboard is an integral part of the cover of the vapor separator tank found on electronically fuel-injected motors. The vapor separator tank, a bizarre combination of a large carburetor float bowl and a small gas tank, is the waypoint to which the low-pressure fuel pump moves fuel as it comes from the fuel tank, en route to the injectors. It exists because the injectors are picky about the pressure of the fuel they receive, and since the low-pressure pump cannot provide sufficient pressure consistently, the electric high-pressure pump takes over, midway.

Instructions

    • 1

Trace the green wire that provides power to the injectors from the injectors to the 15 amp fuse holder. Trace the purple wire from the 15 amp fuse holder to the harness connector that also has a black and white wire connected to it.

    • 2

Secure the 15 amp fuse holder to the retainer clip on the electric fuel pump.

    • 3

Press down on the locking tab of the harness connector and push the harness connector into the right-angle receptacle on top of the high-pressure fuel pump. Release the tab.

    • 4

Push the fuel rail connecting hose quick-connect over the nipple standing straight up, immediately adjacent to the electric fuel pump's housing. Secure the fuel rail connecting hose with plastic-coated wire ties.
