How to Test for the GED & TABE
The GED (General Education Development) and TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) are given for varying purposes. While the GED test is taken by individuals seeking to acquire a high school diploma; the TABE is administered as preparation for the GED test and in some cases, it's administered by employers to gauge an employee's math, reading and English skills. Unlike the GED, you can neither pass or fail the TABE. The TABE serves as an indicator of your potential for advancement, while the GED solidifies your having a high school diploma.

Familiarize yourself with the TABE. A skills assessment test, the TABE determines your aptitude and skill level in reading, math and English. Familiarizing yourself with what can be expected will help you prepare for test day. If you're taking the test for employment purposes, keep in mind that some employers require a specific score to qualify for some positions within the company. As it relates to education, there is no such thing as passing or failing; the test determines your knowledge base and helps in assessing areas where you need improvement.

Find a testing site. Depending upon your reason for taking the test, contact your school, place of employment, or a local service agency that specializes in administering the test to find a TABE testing site. When contacting these entities, also inquire about testing dates and times, as this will help you structure your study schedule. In some cases, the test is administered daily, while in others it may only be given on a weekly or monthly basis.

Prepare for the TABE test using various resources, including: the Internet, flash cards, and TABE test preparation books. A free TABE preparation test can be found on sites like Test Prep Review, and flash cards and books can be purchased from your local bookstore or through websites like Amazon.

Register for the exam. Remember, there is no such thing as passing or failing, but the test can be instrumental in determining your future success. Unlike the GED, TABE tests require no fee.

Contact a local GED testing site to determine the requirements for taking the test. While requirements vary from state to state, in most cases an individual has to be at least 18 years of age and can not have a high school diploma.

Locate a a testing site to determine the date and time for which the test will be administered. Pinpoint a testing site by researching online or looking in the yellow pages phone book. Consider your needs when locating a site, as the costs of the test and dates and time of test administration will vary from facility to facility.

Register for the GED exam. Registration includes a fee that can be as little as $10 or as much as $70. State identification and a social security card are also required when registering.

Prepare for the exam using online resources and/or books that can be purchased at your local book store. Depending on where you live, some universities and GED testing sites offer free or low cost preparation courses.

Bring pens and pencils the day of the test. GED testing sites typically have strict rules and in some cases jackets, hats, phones, and food are confiscated in an effort to produce a controlled and test friendly environment.
