How Can I Use an Adjustment Brush With a Mask in a Lightroom?
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is a powerful tool used by professional and amateur photographers alike, to catalog and to edit digital or scanned film images, quickly and effectively. Lightroom is designed for speed and efficiency, and though it does not boast the same features as the full Adobe Photoshop, it does have a few powerful tools, like the neutral grade filter tool, spot removal and the adjustment brush which, when used effectively can handle the photo-editing needs for all but the most critical assignments.

1
Select the "Adjustment Brush" icon in the "Develop" module. The icon is located at the top of the module at the far right, next to the "Graduated Filter" icon.
-
2
Adjust exposure, brightness, contrast, saturation, clarity, sharpness, color in the mask subhead of the drop down "Adjustment Brush" drop-down module. Each of these settings will affect the area of the photo you will brush to enhance in subsequent steps. For instance, exposure can be used to lighten or darken selected areas -- which can be useful when trying to bring back overexposed highlights -- or bringing out details in blocked-up shadow areas.

3
Adjust the size of the brush, the feather and the flow, in the second drop down menu in the "Adjustment Brush" drop-down module. "Size" will affect the size of the brush used to select areas to edit. "Feather" determines how much contrast there will be between areas that have been brushed and areas that have not been brushed. "Flow" determines how quickly the effects of the brush appear or how intense the effects are.
-
4
Check the "Show Selected Mask Overlay" box in the bottom of the image window. This will allow you to see a red mask over areas you have brushed with the "Adjustment Brush." This will help confine the brush to areas that you want to brush -- so that adjustments don't spill over into the rest of the image.
-
5
Brush the area you wish to adjust with the "Adjustment Brush" by holding down your mouse button and dragging the icon over the image. Repeat strokes or increase "Flow," to increase the effect of the brush.
-
6
Click "Close" on the "Adjustment Brush" drop-down menu, to exit the module. Continue editing photo or export finished photo. You may also click the "Reset" button to undo the adjustment brush mask.
