How to Remove a Junction Box
Junction boxes are required parts of the electrical code in many cities. They must be installed where two wires come together. For example, they are used in ceilings for where the wiring from the ceiling light or fan meets the cable for the electrical circuit. Junction boxes allow electricians easier access to these connections. They can be square, rectangular or oval and made out of metal or plastic. If needed, you can remove a junction box. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Phillips screwdriver
- Wire cutters
- Voltmeter
- Hacksaw
- Rotary cutting tool

1
Turn off the electricty for the circuit where you will be removing the junction box, which should be done at the main circuit breaker. There may be a circuit map on the breaker which will tell you which circuit to cut, if you are unsure.
-
2
Locate the junction box you wish to remove; this could be in an attic, a basement or mounted along a wall.
-
-
3
Loosen the cover on the junction box with a screwdriver. Set aside.
-
4
Carefully remove the wire nuts or tape that may be on the end of the wires. Take care not to touch the wires with your bare hands yet. Once the ends of the wires are visible, check with a voltmeter to ensure that the electricity on the wires has been cut.
-
5
Untwist the wires in the junction box or use a pair of wire cutters to snip off the ends so they are all disconnected.
-
6
Disconnect the junction box from the incoming couplings by unscrewing or cutting, in the case of PVC cemented couplings. In this case, push the wires down into the incoming juction connections so that they are past the point where you will be cutting. Saw the couplings apart from the junction box with a hacksaw or rotary cutting tool.
-
7
Unscrew the junction box from any anchors holding it into the wall or other surface. The screws may be found on the inside of the junction box, as well as the outside surfaces. Remove the junction box.
