How to Issue Engineering Drawing Procedures

Contracted engineers create drawings that consist of the description, location, arrangement and scope of complex machinery and structures from its preliminary stage to its construction or end use. These drawings can include sketches that show design concepts; preliminary design drawings for client review, internal coordination and subcontractor bidding; modification drawings and record drawings to depict the final configuration of structures or function of equipment. Engineering drawings must go through a specific procedure of creation and issuance before being acceptable to proceed to the construction process.

  • Create the engineering drawings by following the procedures of defining the structure or machinery and detailing the materials, parts, and processes that will be used. Assign drawing numbers particular to organization on all engineering design drawings and multi-sheet drawings that will fall under necessary signature requirements for the project to be accepted and signed off by responsible personnel. Drawing numbers consist of specification numbers, process numbers and standards issued by the organization that needs the documents to be developed. This numbering system helps to identify the engineering drawings with all related project lists---such as index, usage, parts and data--- with the same basic unit numbering principle.

  • Identify areas that require pending drawing changes and finalized details as "hold" areas before submitting the created drawings to the manager of engineering. Issue the engineering drawing to the manager of engineering who will assign drawing checkers to review and evaluate all drawing items that fall within his technical responsibility. If drawing specifications are acceptable, the checker will initial or sign-off on the drawing and return the engineering drawings (along with any comments).

  • Evaluate that all checkers have followed signature requirements and signed-off on all drawings concerning preliminary sketches and design drawings. Signatures can be from the drafter, design originator, design checker and the approver who are responsible for reviewing the drawing for intended design, satisfying criteria and meeting applicable compliance rules. Seal the design drawings, modification drawings, and as-built drawings for appropriate record keeping. This sealing procedure should be done by a registered engineer licensed in your state.
