A powder coat paint spray system consists of many different parts. These include the corona or electrostatic gun, an air compressor to power the gun, and an oven that reaches 390 degrees Fahrenheit. The key factor with powder coating is the size of the oven. The entire object to be powder coated must fit inside of an oven. Unless you have access to an oven with the required interior space, it is impossible to apply powder coating successfully.
Things You'll Need
- Corona gun
- Air compressor
- Cleaning solvents
- Rubber gloves
Clean the object to be powder coated with cleaning solvents. Wear rubber gloves during this procedure. Cleaning solvents include paint strippers and etching acids that will remove all the paint. This will strip the surface off of the object and get it down to its original non-coated state.
Block off or tape over all parts of the object that you do not want powder coated.
Apply the powder with a corona or electrostatic gun. Fill the gun with the powder coating powder. Hook up the gun to an air compressor and blow the powder over the object. The electrostatically charged powder will automatically stick to the surface of the object if the cleaning phase has been done successfully.
Bake the object in an oven. Set the temperature to 390 degrees and allow the powder to melt onto the object. Once the powder has been melted, the powder coating is complete.
Tips & Warnings
- Cleaning is paramount for successful powder coating. If any solvent, dirt or grime is left on the object to be powder coated, bubbles will occur. This essentially ruins the powder coating and you'll have to start over from scratch.
