How to Make Animal Hair Brushes
Brushes are one of the biggest expenses of painting. You can save money and add a touch of creative flair with homemade animal-hair brushes. Unlike standard, commercial brushes, animal-hair brushes can be used to create different textures and strokes in paintings. You can use a wide range of animal hair for your brushes -- horse, goat, rabbit, cat and even badger hair make excellent materials for homemade paintbrushes.

1
Wash and dry the animal hair you're using to get rid of any mites or debris that may be in the hair. Cut the hair to the desired length.
-
2
Bundle the hair and tie it very tightly with string or strong thread, leaving about an inch for the section at the top that you'll use to connect the brush to the dowel.
-
-
3
Apply hot glue to the top of the brush and the end of the dowel. Connect the brush to the dowel. Wrap a length of string or thread around the dowel and brush. Secure with more hot glue.
-
4
Allow the glue to dry. Wrap a narrow strip of masking tape around the top of the brush and dowel for extra support. Trim the end of the brush to the desired length, shape and angle.
