Instructions

-
1
Measure the height of the shoji screen. Cut two pieces of quarter-round trim to match the length. Sand the cut edges.
-
2
Determine approximately where on the wall you want to place the folding shoji screen.
-
-
3
Turn on the stud finder and place it flat against the wall. Slide the stud finder horizontally along the wall until it signals the location of one side of a stud, usually with a steadily-illuminated light or a beeping sound. Mark the wall at that location. Continue sliding the stud finder across the wall until you locate the other side of the stud and mark that location.
-
4
Use the plumb-line and chalk, or spirit level and pencil, to draw a straight line down the center of the stud.
-
5
Center one side of the shoji screen against the vertical line. Lightly mark along both sides every 12 inches, from top to bottom. Set the shoji screen aside.
-
6
Lay the flat side of one piece of quarter-round trim along the shoji-screen-edge markings. Ensure that the other flat side faces in toward the vertical centerline drawn on the wall.
-
7
Nail both pieces of quarter-round trim in place every 12 to 16 inches.
-
8
Set the shoji screen flush against the wall and trim. Lay the other piece of quarter-round trim along the corner formed by the shoji screen and the wall.
-
9
Nail the quarter-round trim to the wall, being careful not to angle the nails through the side of the shoji screen.
-
10
Remove the shoji screen. Fill in the nail holes on both pieces of trim with wood putty. Lightly sand over the wood putty until the surface is smooth.
-
11
Apply masking tape along the wall flush against both pieces of quarter-round trim. Paint or stain the trim. Carefully remove the masking tape. Reinstall the shoji screen.
