How do I Soundproof Window Jalousies?
Window jalousies are windows operated by a crank or turn screw. The window's glass louvers tilt open to allow air into the room. These older types of windows allow unobstructed breezes to flow through a building. Their slatted design can make them difficult to close, however. Furthermore, they are not very energy efficient and do not keep out a lot of sound. The easiest way to soundproof a jalousie window involves making a removable soundproof "plug" out of a soundproofing mat. The plug keeps out sound and light and also acts as an insulator for the window.
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- 2-inch-thick soundproofing mat
- Mat backing board
- Utility knife
- Contact cement
- Cabinet handles (optional)
- Electric screwdriver

1
Measure the window frame with a tape measure to determine the dimensions of soundproofing mat you will need. Sold by the linear foot, soundproofing mats come in rolls measuring 4 feet wide. If your window jalousie is an odd size, order the next-largest half-foot size of material.

2
Cut a soundproofing mat and backing fiberboard to size with a utility knife. Place contact cement onto the back of the fiberboard and the mat. Attach the fiberboard to the mat, and let it dry or set.

Use your utility knife to cut finger holes in the backboard for ease of use, or attach cabinet handles to the fiberboard by driving screws through it with an electric screwdriver.

4
Place the finished soundproof window plug into the window. It should fit snugly. Position it so the mat faces the window and the board faces the interior of the room for added soundproofing.

Tips & Warnings
Leave 6 inches of air space between the glass and the soundproof mat for superior sound reduction.
