Kids' Homemade Fleece Knot Blankets

Kids' Homemade Fleece Knot Blankets thumbnail
Let your children pick out their own pattern to make the blanket more personal.

Fleece is a soft, warm fabric that is perfect for kids' blankets. You can make kids' homemade fleece knot blankets with two pieces of fleece tied together along the edges. Select no-pill fleece in colorful prints and contrasting solids. Let the kids help tie the cut fringe to create a snuggly no-sew blanket in about an hour. Make blankets for your kids to use at home and to give to the children of family members or friends.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces of fleece 10 inches wider and 10 inches longer than the finished size of the blanket.

    • 2

Gently smooth one piece of fleece right-side down on a clean, flat surface. Take care not to stretch or distort the fabric.

    • 3

Lay the second piece of fleece right-side up on top of the first piece. Gently smooth the fleece into place so that all four edges are even. The layers of fleece will stick together.

    • 4

Stick a length of blue painter's tape parallel to each side, 5 inches from the edge. The tape lines should cross each other 5 inches from each corner.

    • 5

Cut away a 5-inch square from both layers of fleece at each corner. Use the tape edges closest to the corners as a guide.

    • 6

Measure and cut straight lines 1 inch apart through both layers of fabric, from the edge of the fleece to the outer edge of the tape. Cut the blanket along all four sides to form pairs of strips to use as ties.

    • 7

Tie each pair of strips together with an overhand knot (see resources). Tie another overhand knot to further secure each pair of strips.

    • 8

Gently peel away the painter's tape.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose no-pill fleece to prevent unsightly fuzz balls from appearing on the fabric surface during use and laundering.

  • Substitute a layer of cotton fabric for a layer of fleece to make a lighter weight blanket.
