Read about the show. To make a good character for the show, it is important to understand the basic story line. This means knowing about Duel Academy and the school's setup, understanding the different options for decks and knowing about the art style.

Make up a character description. There are two basic methods for determining the look of the character: written descriptions or drawn pictures. Both can give a mental image of the character.

Make a character name. Be sure to select the name after you have an idea what it looks like. For example, a character with blonde hair and blue eyes is unlikely to have an exotic name, while a character with an exotic appearance will likely have a more unusual name. It is also possible to contradict the name and appearance, but it is better to make the contradiction on purpose rather than accidentally.

Determine the character dormitory. All characters in GX live in a dorm except teachers. The dorms in the show are split according to student grades. For example, students who have poor grades go to Slifer Red dorm rooms, while students with good grades go to Obelisk Blue.

Select a character deck type. For a "Yu-Gi-Oh! GX" character, the deck is one of the most important elements. Deck types differ dramatically depending on the character preferences. For example, characters might have all-female cards in their deck, elemental cards only, machine cards, insect cards or random mixes.
