How to Calculate Boat Trailer Capacity

When calculating the boat trailer capacity, the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, or GVWR, of the boat trailer must be included and the weight of the boat and other equipment should account for less than 85 percent of the GVWR. It is necessary to take correct measurements of the boat trailer and the boat since is both illegal and dangerous to use a trailer that is smaller than the size of the boat.

Measure the width and length of the boat trailer. Begin by measuring from the front part of the trailer to the rear of the trailer bed. Measure the length of the entire boat and ensure that it falls within the length of the boat trailer. These measurements should include the length of the bow platform and the motor transom.

Look for the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the boat trailer which is usually displayed at the back of the trailer. The GVWR is the total weight capacity of the trailer and includes the weight of the boat, engine, gear, gasoline and engine.

    • 3

Determine the weight of the boat by looking at the boat owner's manual which will state the dry weight of the boat. This weight excludes the fuel and the gear. You should factor in the dry weight to compensate for any additional items.

    • 4

Record all the measurements and the approximate weights then make your calculations by ensuring that these measurements meet the required standards. Compare the lengths and widths of the boat trailer and boat and ensure that the boat can easily fit into the trailer.

    • 5

Look at the GVWR of the boat trailer and compare it with the weight of the boat. The total weight of the boat should fall within the median weight of the trailer. The weight of the boat with the gear and fuel included should not exceed 85 percent of the GVWR of the boat trailer.

    • 6

Subtract the weight of the boat (including the approximate weight of gears, engine & fuel) from the GVWR of the boat trailer. Divide the result by the GVWR and multiply it by .01 to get the percentage of the boat weight. For instance if the boat trailer GVWR is 2500 lbs and the total boat weight is 1000 lbs calculate as follows: 2500 -1000 = 1500;1500/2500 x .01 = 60 percent. Hence the percentage of the boat does not exceed the 85 percent weight capacity of the boat trailer.
