A backsplash is a washable surface behind your sink that protects your wall from splatters. Most backsplashes are tile, so head to your local home improvement center armed with the measurements of the area you intend to cover. Decide on a firm amount that you can spend without breaking your budget. When you begin comparing tiles, it can be easy to fall in love with a style that you can't afford. When setting your budget, remember to include all materials and the cost of installation, unless you plan to do it yourself.

Measure the width and length of the area you wish to cover with the backsplash. Use a metal measuring tape; slack or stretch in a fabric measuring tape can result in an inaccurate measurement. Write down the measurements.
