Why Won't the Pool Sweep Run?

Why Won't the Pool Sweep Run? thumbnail
Troubleshoot why your pool vacuum is not running.

A pool sweep, more commonly called a pool vacuum, runs along the bottom of your pool to clean up settled dirt, sand and other sediment. Most pool vacuums are automatic and run on their own when hooked up to a suction line or skimmer. If your pool vacuum is not running, you may have a clog or insecure connection. If after troubleshooting, your pool vacuum still won't run, contact your pool vacuum's manufacturer for further assistance. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the covers over the propeller and intake areas. Check for debris that might be clogging these areas and remove.

    • 2

Check the hose connections and secure tightly, if necessary. Also check the skimmer and adapter connections and tighten.

    • 3

Clean the pool vacuum's filter, if it has one, or empty the dirt collection container. If the vacuum is clogged with dirt, it may not run.

    • 4

Check that the hose is adjusted to the proper length. It should extend the length of the pool with two to three extra sections to account for slack.

    • 5

Clean the pool filter and pump basket, if the water flow is low. Since the vacuum uses the pool's suction line, it will not operate properly if the water flow is inadequate.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the pressure gauge on your filter reads more than 10 psi over normal, the filter is likely clogged and in need of backwashing. This will greatly affect your pool sweep.
