How to Install a New Air Conditioner
Summer days can be unbearable without an air conditioner's cool refreshment. When improperly installed, however, window-mounted air conditioning units can endanger pedestrians walking below. For this reason, some apartment managers insist that only professionals install a unit. With your landlord's consent, however, you can easily install your own air conditioner in a double-hung window. Check the condition of the window sill and window frames to make sure they can support your air conditioner. If the wood is in bad condition, choose a different window.

Open the window.

Install the sill-mounted supports that came with your air conditioner. Follow the instructions that came with your air conditioner to determine how to do this. The supports will hold your air conditioner in place when you open the window.

Measure your windowsill lengthwise and mark the center. Place the mounting bracket that came with your air conditioner on this center mark. Drive a screw into the center of the bracket to secure it to your sill. The bracket keeps the air conditioner level and at a slight tilt to allow drainage.

Lift the air conditioner and slide it into the window over the bracket. You should hear a click, indicating that the unit is locked over the bracket.

Close the window so that the bottom of the window frame rests on top of the air conditioner.

Pull out the extensions on either side of the air conditioner until they hit the sides of the window. Screw these extensions to the bottom of your window frame.

Place an angle bracket on either side of your window frame where it meets the other window frame. Screw the angle brackets to secure them.

Place the foam strip that came with your machine on top of the window frame and press down to seal the gap between the two windows.

Plug in the air conditioner.
