How to Make a Necktie in Kindergarten
Children love to play dress-up and nothing makes them feel as grown as wearing a necktie. Using needles or a sewing machine to make ties is not appropriate for younger children, but this fun and safe craft idea offers an alternative way to make ties with kindergarten-age kids.
Things You'll Need
- Colored fun foam (1 sheet per tie)
- Pencil
- Scissors
- School glue
- Wool or elastic
- Contrasting colored fun foam (optional)
- Colored marker pens (optional)

1
Use a pencil to draw the outline of a tie on a sheet of colored foam in a size appropriate for the child who will be wearing it. Draw only the part of the tie that hangs down; don't worry about the part that goes around the neck. Also draw a rectangle about 3 inches long and the same width as the narrower part of the tie at the top.

2
Cut out the tie and the rectangle.

3
Fold the rectangle in half to make a square, and use school glue or foam glue to stick it over the top part of the tie, so that the fold in the rectangle lays across the top of the tie. This will create the "knot" of the tie and should create an opening through which you can later thread wool or elastic. Allow the glue to completely dry.

4
Decorate the tie using colored marker pens or by cutting and sticking shapes made from contrastig colored fun foam onto the tie. Allow the glue and ink from the marker pens to completely dry.
-
5
Cut wool or elastic to a length appropriate for the neck of the child who will be wearing the tie. Thread the wool or elastic through the loop in the tie's knot and tie it at the back of the child's neck. Your craft necktie is now complete.
