How to Make Your Own Phonics Flip Book

A phonics flip book is a simple book to make. The simple flip book is made with heavy card stock and simply drawn figures. Several layers of pictures and letters are possible in each flip book when using plastic combs as a connection device. Businesses that offer copying and printing services offer comb-binding of books for individuals who do not own a binding machine. A phonics flip book is comprised of a letter coversheet with corresponding pictures beneath the letter.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the three letter words for use within the flip book. For example, you could start with "cat," "rap," "man" and "dad." Write down the words on a separate piece of paper. Begin with a simple three-strip flip book. Add more strips for more complicated words.

    • 2

Place 6 to 12 pieces of 8 1/2 by 11-inch card stock on top of one another. Line up the edges.

    • 3

Open the combing machine and place an 11-inch edge in the slot. Push the handle backwards or forwards, depending on the machine, to create the combing holes along the edge of the paper. Remove the sheets of paper.

    • 4

Insert the 1/8-inch plastic comb in the combing machine. Drop the slots between the comb over the points sticking up from the top of the machine. Pull the handle forward or backward, depending on the machine, to open the comb.

    • 5

Slide the holes on the edge of the 8 1/2 by 11-inch paper on the comb. Push the handle to the start position to secure the paper to the plastic comb. Take the finished item off the combing machine.

    • 6

Place the combed edge on the left hand side of the booklet. Lay the booklet on a flat stable work surface. Measure and mark the opposite 11-inch edge into sections 3 5/8 inches each. Repeat the process along the combed edge.

    • 7

Line the top edge of the ruler up with marks directly opposite of one another. Draw a line connecting the marks by pulling a pencil across the top edge of the ruler. Cut through the sheets of paper on the drawn line.

    • 8

Begin on the top three strips. Select the first word. Write the three letters of the word across the strips placing a single letter on each strip. Flip to the next set of strips and repeat the process until all pages are complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add as many pages to the flip book as desired. The amount of pages is determined by the size of the comb attachment. Use larger combs for thicker books.
