Body lotions can be made at home professionally by using the same ingredients and techniques that commercial lotion manufacturers use. The primary ingredients of the lotion, the texture and the scent are all factors that can be used to determine the quality of the lotion. Professionally-made body lotions are made with quality ingredients that have a light, smooth consistency, are not too thick or too thin and are nice and easy to apply to the skin. You can make your own professional quality body lotion can by using the right ingredients and technique.

Use an emulsifier to make the base of the lotion. Beeswax is an emulsifying wax which can be used as your lotion base. Shea butter and cocoa butter can also be used as lotion bases. Get the amount you will need depending on how much lotion you want to make.

Heat the emulsifier lotion base then place it into a mixing bowl. Add your preferred essential oil to the base. Essential oils such as almond oil, rosemary oil and lavender oil can be used as fragrant carrier oils in the lotion.

Place the oil in the mixture one drop at a time. Use a wire whisk to mix it in until it is well scented to your satisfaction and has a smooth consistency that isn’t too thick or thin.

Add lukewarm water to the mixture and mix all together to get the desired consistency if the mixture is still too thick. Put color into the mixture using a food color of your choice. Most lotions are white or creamy-colored while some are light pink.

Use a teaspoon to add small amounts of the food coloring to the mixture in the bowl. Stir the food coloring in with the lotion mixture. If the color is too light then add more coloring and stir it well. Place the mixture into an unused lotion bottle with a cover and let it set for 24 hours before use. This will allow the oil to completely permeate the lotion base.
