How to Clean Etched Glass Cooktops

Etching is created by the careful application of acidic or abrasive substances to glass surfaces. Once applied, the material roughens the surface, giving the finished piece a decorative, frosted appearance. When placed on top of the stove, etched glass lends an elegant look to the kitchen. While the etching makes a great embellishment, it can be very difficult to keep clean. Dirt, grease, and grime get trapped in the abrasions, leaving the stove top looking grubby. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the cooktop with a damp sponge to remove any loose dirt or crumbs.

    • 2

Pour 1 tsp. of liquid dish soap onto the center of a damp cloth. Use the soapy cloth to scrub the soiled areas of the glass. Gently rub the dirt away, moving the cloth in small circles to loosen and lift cooked-on food from the surface. Rinse the soap by wiping the cooktop with a wet cloth.

    • 3

Pour 1 cup of isopropyl alcohol into a large bowl. Add 1 cup of water and 1 cup of household ammonia. Stir until the ingredients are well blended. Transfer the solution to a plastic spray bottle. Spray the mixture evenly over the surface of the cooktop. Wipe it off with a paper towel.

    • 4

Cover any baked-on grease or burnt food spills with a paper towel that has been soaked in the ammonia solution. Place a heavy glass or small bowl on top of the towel to weigh it down, pressing the ammonia into the surface of the glass. Wait 20 minutes. Wipe away the loosened residue with a damp sponge. Dry the glass with a paper towel.

Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into a small bowl. Add 1/4 cup of water, and stir well. With an old toothbrush, spread this mixture over any remaining grease or grime. Scrub briskly, moving the bristles of the brush in small circles to dislodge stubborn stains. Wait 5 minutes. Wipe the residue away with a damp sponge. Dry the glass with a paper towel. Repeat if necessary.
