How to Regulate Company Gifts to Clinical Investigators

How to Regulate Company Gifts to Clinical Investigators thumbnail
The relationship between clinical investigators and pharmaceutical and medical device companies can be symbiotic.

Clinical investigators work for universities or large medical centers, although there are independent researchers. The sponsoring pharmaceutical or medical device company contracts with the clinical investigator to test the company's drug or device to confirm that it is safe and that it works. A conflict of interest is created when researchers or staff accept gifts, services or favors from the sponsoring company. These might suggest the the researcher is biased in favor of the company. Conflicts of interest are problematic because serious and substantiated allegations of lack of impartiality and objectivity can end the clinical investigator's career.
