How to Refinish Furniture With Wood Veneer
If you have an old cabinet, table or other piece of furniture that is in need a complete facelift -- and it's not solid wood that can be sanded and stained -- consider refacing with wood veneer. Veneer is a thin layer of wood that comes with adhesive already on the back of it, so you can press it into place over the existing surface, giving the look of wood with the durability of a laminate covering. Things You'll Need
- Vibrating hand-sander with medium sandpaper
- Rag or dry cloth
- Tape measure
- Carpenter's square
- Pencil
- Self-adhesive wood veneer
- Utility knife
- Dry washcloth
- Wood block

Dull the existing surface of the furniture with a vibrating hand sander and medium-grit sandpaper. Remove all shine. Wipe off the dust.

Measure the dimensions of each area of the furniture to be covered in veneer. Mark out the dimensions on sheets of veneer using a pencil and square. Add one inch of overhang around perimeter of each marked measurement.

Cut out the veneer along the lines using a utility knife.

Pull off the paper from the back of the first veneer piece to expose the adhesive backing. Press the veneer to the appropriate area, leaving an inch of extra overhang.

Use a utility knife to cut off the extra veneer from the edges of the area.

Wrap a wood block in a dry washcloth and press it down on the veneer to secure the veneer. Press the block down on each span.
