This will be a challenging time in your life. This may be the first time you are away from family and friends, and you may feel homesick. Symptoms include acute longing and preoccupying thoughts of home. Adults as well as children experience homesickness . Since phone calls are not usually allowed in basic training, you must come up with other effective ways to deal with homesickness.

  • Carry pictures of friends and family in your wallet. Look at the pictures often to feel the happiness and love these people bring to your life.

  • Write letters to family and friends. Make sure you have enough stationery, pens and stamps. Sharing your feelings with loves ones is an effective way of relieving stress, which homesickness can bring.

  • Write your feelings in a journal. Severe homesickness can lead to depression. Writing your feelings in a journal is a way to release negative feelings. According to the WebMD website, writing down your feelings can affect your physical health in a positive way by lowering blood pressure and giving you a healthier immune system.

  • Make friends. Spending time in others' company will focus your attention on something besides your homesick feelings. Whenever possible, try to initiate conversation with fellow recruits. You may make some lifelong friends.
