Zumba is a resistance and endurance workout composed of Latin-inspired dance moves such as salsa, mambo and calypso and other strength-building exercises. To build and encourage rhythm, Zumba workouts are done to a Latin soundtrack. There are Zumba classes offered all over the country. If you prefer to workout at home, the popular Zumba workout can come to you. There are a few ways to learn and burn calories with Zumba in the privacy and convenience of your home.
Order the Zumba Fitness DVD collection. Zumba Fitness, LLC, the company that markets Zumba fitness products, offers a four-set DVD collection that includes seven different Zumba workouts. It also comes with a set of fitness dumbbells and sells for $59.95 (as of 2011). Other retailers such as Walmart and Target also sell a Zumba Fitness DVD that costs less but doesn't include as many workouts.
Learn Zumba at home with the "Zumba Fitness: Join the Party" video game. This game is available for the Xbox 360 Kinect, Wii and PlayStation 3 with a connected motion controller. The game forces you to follow nine dance styles to 30 different Latin music tracks. The motion tracker on the console follows your movement and adds points for following the game instruction correctly. This Zumba at home option offers the most incentive -- points -- for learning the dance moves and keeping up with the workout.
Practice Zumba for free with YouTube. Zumba Fitness has a "Basic Steps Demo" on their LoveZumba YouTube channel that offers instructions in the most basic dance moves. They have put additional introductory videos on YouTube. Also inserting the term "zumba" into YouTube's search field will turn up a handful of Zumba videos. Online videos are usually only a few minutes in length, which allows you to pick up basic Zumba moves that you can then configure into a full Zumba workout on your own.
