How to Convert Square Inches Per Linear Foot to Square Feet

A linear measurement is a measurement taken in a straight line, and a square measurement is the length multiplied by the width. Many DIY products and home improvement items are sold in square feet. Items such as carpet, lino, wood and beading are commonly sold per square foot. Work out the square footage of an area before ordering the items. Square measurements are also used on building sites and by interior decorators. Understanding square feet is a simple mathematical process.

Instructions

1. Measure the length of the area in inches. Write down the measurement.

2. Divide the length inches by 12, to determine the number of feet. Write down the figure. For example, if the length measures 84 inches, then 84 divided by 12 equals 7. So the linear length is 7 feet.

3. Measure the width of the area in inches and write down the measurement.

4. Divide the width inches by 12, to determine the number of feet. For example, if the width measures 60 inches, 60 divided by 12 is 5. So the width is 5 feet.

5. Multiply the length by the width. The result is the squared footage. So for this example, multiply 7 by 5; the result is 35 square feet.
