How to Sew a Eureka Timberline Rain Fly
Nothing ruins a camping trip like sleeping in a wet tent. Many types of camping tents come with a waterproof covering called a "rain fly," designed to keep weather and condensation off the tent fabric. The Eureka Timberline series of tents come with a rain fly included, but if the rain fly becomes ripped or lost, you can use fabric and grommets -- metal rings that help reinforce attachment holes in fabric -- to sew a new rain fly.
Things You'll Need
- Waterproof rip stop nylon
- Shears
- Sewing machine
- Nylon thread
- Rubber mallet
- Fabric hole punch
- Grommet tool
- Grommets and washers
Instructions

1
Cut a piece of rip stop nylon fabric approximately 8 feet wide and 8 feet long with shears.
-
2
Fold the edges of the fabric in approximately 1 inch and sew them down with a sewing machine. Begin at a corner and sew the folded edge down in a straight line. When you reach a corner, turn the fabric and sew the next folded edge in the same fashion. Repeat this process until you have sewn all four folded edges of the fabric.

-
3
Punch a hole in each corner of the fabric with a rubber mallet and fabric hole punch.
-
4
Insert a grommet into one of the holes in the fabric.
-
5
Place a washer over the hole on the back side of the fabric from the grommet. This position allows the washer to be hammered into the grommet, forming a complete grommet.
-
6
Position the grommet over a grommet tool's base and insert the tap into the base.
-
7
Hammer the tap into the base with a rubber mallet. Repeat this process with the remaining three holes.
