My Toilet Won't Unclog

Most people keep a toilet plunger nearby to remedy this problem when someone uses too much toilet paper or an item that isn't supposed to be flushed clogs the toilet. Loosening the clog enough to flush the toilet without it overflowing and causing a mess may be difficult. A handy tool called a closet auger is inexpensive and effective in getting rid of the clog. 1
Shut off the water valve. It is located behind and underneath the toilet tank. This prevents any additional water from entering the toilet.
-
2
Crank the handle of the closet auger clockwise into the drain in the bottom of the toilet bowl. Continue twisting the handle until it gets tight.
-
-
3
Twist the handle in the opposite direction once you feel it tighten.
-
4
Repeat this action three or four times or until the water quickly drains from the toilet.
-
5
Pull the closet auger out from the drain. If it gets stuck, wiggle the closet auger around to loosen the obstruction or push and pull on it a few times. The closet auger has a soft, protective sleeve so it will not damage the toilet. Remove the tool from the toilet once the water drains quickly.
-
6
Pour a bucket of water into the toilet bowl. It will drain rapidly if the obstruction is gone. If not, repeat the method with the closet auger until the obstruction is clear.
-
7
Turn the water valve back on and flush the toilet a couple of times to ensure it is working correctly.
