Keep your work neat when solving word problems.

Word problems are some students' least favorite types of math problems. If you don't know how to approach a word problem, you may become confused about what the problem is asking or how to begin solving it. You can take the stress out of word problems in math if you approach them with a logical list of strategies. These tips can help you solve word problems calmly and confidently.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the word problem a few times carefully. You must be able to clearly understand what is being asked before you can attempt a solution.

    • 2

Say the question aloud if possible. In a testing situation, you may be able to whisper the problem very quietly. Sometimes hearing the problem can help you to clarify what is being asked.

    • 3

Look for keywords that indicate which type of mathematical operation is required to solve the problem. Some keywords for addition include, "more than," "added to," "combined" and "sum." Subtraction terms include "difference" and "less." Multiplication keywords include "of," "times" and "product." Division lingo includes "per," "out of," "percent" and "quotient."

    • 4

Write a mathematical sentence from the word problem and use variables for unknown terms. You will solve for the variable in the sentence. For example, in the sentence, X + 3 = 10, you are solving for "X."

    • 5

Keep your work neat. If you write messily and in an unorganized manner, you may become confused if you need to refer back to work you just completed. Keeping your work neat also allows the teacher to see how you have been approaching the problem.
