How to Clean an Exhaust Fan Screen

Exhaust fans are designed to remove excess moisture and odors from a room. They are fairly durable pieces of equipment but do require regular cleaning to prevent dirt and dust from clogging up the exterior screen. In addition, cleaning the exhaust fan screen removes allergens that can cause breathing problems. Cleaning the exhaust fan screen is a straightforward process that should be repeated at least once per month to prevent excessive buildup.

Things You'll Need

• Step stool
• Vacuum with brush attachment
• Cloth
• Water

Instructions

1. Place a step ladder underneath the exhaust fan so that you can easily access it.

2. Vacuum the entire outside of the fan screen using a brush attachment on the end of the vacuum hose. Use long, slow stokes as you vacuum to prevent stirring the dust up into the air.

3. Hold a clean rag under running water until it is saturated and then wring it out as tightly as possible.

4. Wipe the entire exterior of the exhaust fan screen to remove any dust or debris that is still attached to the surface. Make sure to insert the rag into any slats or openings that are on the screen to remove dirt in these locations as well.

Tips & Warnings

• If your ceilings are tall and the vacuum won't reach, detach the screen from the wall or ceiling by removing the screws that secure it in place. Then wash the screen in a sink of soapy water and dry it well before replacing it.
