How to Make a Compass Rose for 3rd Grade
A compass rose is often seen in the corner of a map and is used to help determine direction. Having your students make a compass rose is an effective way to teach them how to tell what direction something is in. They can be created in a variety of styles ranging from a very basic one to one that is elaborately decorated. If you want to help your third graders to make a compass rose, it can easily be done with a pencil and a few other classroom supplies.

1
Distribute a blank piece of paper, ruler and paper cup to each student and make sure they all have a pencil to write with.
-
2
Instruct them to place the paper cup, rim side down in the center of the paper and trace around it to make a circle on the page. Tell them to hold the cup as steady as possible so the circle is nice and round.
-
-
3
Tell them to mark a dot in the center of the circle and draw a cross through it with the lines of the cross reaching out 1/4 of an inch past the edge of the circle.
-
4
Show them how to put the directions North and South on the compass. Instruct them to put an "N" for north at the top of the line that runs vertically through the circle and an "S" for south at the bottom of that same line.
-
5
Instruct them to put a "W" for west on the left hand side of the line that runs horizontally through the circle and an "E" for east on the right hand side.
-
6
Tell them to draw an "X" that passes through the center of the cross and reaches out to the edge of the circle.
-
7
Allow them to neatly color their compass roses and display or use them however you see fit.
