How to Craft With Loofah

How to Craft With Loofah thumbnail
Loofah sponges are a perfect natural exfoliant.

A loofah is a coarse natural sponge that comes from the fruit of a loofah, or luffa, tropical plant. Because of its rough texture, loofah sponges are commonly used for skin exfoliation. The sponges are effective at removing dead skin and buffing rough areas of the body like the feet, elbows and knees. Loofah soaps are a common craft project done with loofah sponges that is fun and practical. Avoid buying expensive exfoliants by making your own loofah soap.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a natural loofah sponge from a craft store, bath supply retailer or local market. Find ready-make soap from a craft store and buy additional scented oils, if desired. Adding a touch of lavender, for example, gives the soap a pleasant scent.

    • 2

Place the cupcake cups on the baking pan. Use as many cups as you want loofah soaps.

    • 3

Cut the loofah sponge into ¼-to-½ inch thick slices. Use a bread knife or other serrated knife for best results.

    • 4

Place the loofah slices into the cupcake cups.

    • 5

Microwave ready-make soap mix in a bowl until it is completely melted and easy to pour (about three to five minutes).

    • 6

Pour the soap mix into the cupcake cups. Fill about half way or until the loofah sponge is completely covered with soap mix.

    • 7

Allow the soap mix to completely cool and harden, about 30 minutes.

    • 8

Remove cupcake cups and use loofah soap in place of other exfoliant.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add and stir scented oils to heated soap mix before pouring it into the cupcake cups. A few drops are usually all that is necessary.

  • Loofah soaps make wonderful, homemade gifts. Wrap them in tissue paper and give them to friends and family.

  • Use soap molds, also found at craft stores, to give your soaps creative shapes and designs.

  • Use caution when handling the hot soap mix. Overheated soap mix can burn skin.
