How to Intercept VoIP With Vonage

How to Intercept VoIP With Vonage thumbnail
Intercepting unwanted and anonymous telephone calls can prevent sleep disturbances.

Call interception is a telephone service feature that prevents subscribers from being surprised by anonymous and unexpected phone calls. This feature is common for traditional land line phones and has been available for years. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), however, is a relatively new technology for supporting telephone conversations. Vonage's call intercept is included for free in its calling plans. This feature blocks calls that are deemed anonymous, private or withheld. As a Vonage subscriber, you have two routes through which you can enable the interception of anonymous phone calls.

Instructions

  1. Enable Using a Telephone

    • 1

Pick up the telephone handset that is connected to the Vonage service.

    • 2

Dial "*77" to turn on "Anonymous Call Block." An automated voice will announce and confirm that this feature has been activated.

    • 3

Dial "*87" to turn off "Anonymous Call Block." Listen for the automated voice to confirm that it has been turned off.

    Enable Using the Online Account

    • 4

Navigate to the Vonage "Online Account" Web page (see link in Resources). Type in your username or 10-digit phone number and password. Click "Sign In."

    • 5

Click "Features." Scroll down to the "Anonymous Call Block" section.

    • 6

Select the Vonage phone number for which you want to enable "Anonymous Call Block."

    • 7

Click "Configure." Click "On" to enable Anonymous Call Block or "Off" to disable the feature. Click "Submit."

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider adding your VoIP number to the National Do Not Call Registry to reduce the number of telemarketers that might call your telephone (see Resources).
