How to Choose Which Kindle to Buy?

Save

Amazon offers three versions of its Kindle electronic reading device -- Kindle (Wi-Fi), Kindle 3G (with 3G and Wi-Fi), and Kindle DX -- at varying prices. All three have the capacity to store 3,500 books and will download books in 60 seconds. Therefore, your decision of which Kindle to buy will be based on other factors such as cost, portability, and battery life.

Things You'll Need

  • Internet connection
  • Decide what your price range will be for the reading device. A Kindle can cost either $139, $189, or $379 as of January, 2011.

  • Ask yourself whether you would need wireless coverage worldwide to download books if you are out of the country. Both the Kindle 3G and the Kindle DX offer wireless coverage in 100 countries.

  • Find out if you have wireless Internet access in your home. To download books for the Kindle (Wi-Fi), you must be connected to a wireless router. The Kindle 3G and Kindle DX have free, built in wireless connectivity so you can access the Kindle Store anywhere.

  • Determine how important portability is for your reading pleasure. The Kindle DX has the largest screen measuring 9.7 inches diagonally, but it also weighs 10.2 ounces more than the Kindle (Wi-Fi) and the Kindle 3G. While it may be nicer to read the larger Kindle DX screen, it will take up more space in a bag or suitcase.

  • Choose whether you would like your device to be graphite or white in color.
