How to Find Password-Protection Software for Web Sites

When you protect a Web page, visitors need to enter a username and password to access the page. If you know HTML and JavaScript, it's not that difficult to create a simple password-protection script (see "How to Password-Protect a Web Page"). But if you don't know scripting or if you want a more secure solution, try these ideas.

1. Visit pages that offer free JavaScripts and do a search for "password." Many of these scripts are just cut and paste, requiring only minimal changes.

2. JavaScript password scripts can only go so far. Protect extremely sensitive information by hiring a Web developer (or your Internet service provider) to create a customized password solution for you.

3. Contact your Internet service provider (ISP) and ask if it provides password-protection services. This entails setting aside a portion of the server for your pages, so some ISPs may charge extra.

• If you use a free script, add a courtesy button or a reference to the provider on your page.
• You may need to get permission before using JavaScripts from another Web site. When in doubt, ASK!
• Not all browsers support scripts. Be sure to follow directions for providing alternates to scripts on your Web page.
