White water mold is a common mold found in swimming pools. It forms when the pool water is improperly maintained and poorly circulated. Though it may appear similar to algae, it is in fact a fungus, and must be treated as such. This type of mold is typically resistant to chlorine, bromine and other sanitizers. With the proper cleaning and treatment of a chemical sanitizer, you should be able to get rid of water mold in your swimming pool.
Things You'll Need
- Oxygen bleach
- Pool skimmer
- Scrub brush
- Pool vacuum
- Pool testing kit
Apply oxidizing chemicals to the pool skimmer and heavy-duty scrub brush. Clean up all of the water mold that you see floating in the water. Using the scrub brush, throroughly scrub the pool walls and tiles.
Vacuum the bottom of the pool. Don't set the vacuum to a filter setting, as the mold could get trapped in the filter and then transferred back into the pool water at a later date. Instead, set the vacuum to the waste setting.
Add an algaecide to your pool water once the pool is clean. Even though the mold is not an algae, you can kill it with an algaecide, such as copper sulfate. Make sure that your pool's alkalinity is above 50 ppm and below 200 ppm before you add an algaecide, as it might not work or could stain your pool. You can check the alkalinity by using a pool testing kit. Closely follow the application directions on the algaecide label so that you add the correct amount of algaecide for your swimming pool.
Maintain a healthy pH level in your pool. The ideal pool pH should be between 7.2 and 7.6 for the sanitizers (chlorine and bromine) to work effectively. The chlorine level dropping below 1 ppm could be the reason why your pool is acquiring a mold buildup.
Run the pool filter continuously for several days until the water clears.
Tips & Warnings
- Do not swim in the water until the pH level in the pool is in the ideal range and the chlorine level is above 1 ppm.
