Sony's PlayStation 2 console uses DVD-ROM discs for game play, either single-layer (4.7 GB) or dual-layered DVD-DL (8.5 GB) discs. These DVDs are often fragile and can eventually get scratched or otherwise damaged by the normal wear and tear of use. Preserve your PS2 games on your USB memory stick to avoid this problem.

Make sure your Internet connection is working properly so you can download a .ISO reader.

Turn on your computer and log into your operating system. Open your operating system's web browser and download a free program that can read CDs and DVDs to .ISO image files on your computer (see Resources). These programs will read your game and create a perfect copy of the entire disc or discs in a single file, called a .ISO image. Download a .ISO reader and install it when the download finishes. Reboot your computer afterward.

Insert your PS2 game into your computer's DVD disc tray.

Log in to your computer's operating system and eject your DVD drive's disc tray. Insert your PS2 game and close the tray. Run the .ISO reading program and select "Read to image file." Select your DVD drive and a destination directory for the .ISO disc image file and click "OK" after you have given the file a name. The program will begin reading your PS2 game to a .ISO file on your computer.

Your new PS2 .ISO disc image can be used to create backup copies of your games in case of loss, theft or damage.

Once the .ISO reader has finished reading your PS2 game to a .ISO file, close the program and plug your USB memory stick into your computer. Navigate your operating system's explorer to the PS2 game's .ISO file on your computer, and select it with your mouse. Drag it to your USB memory stick using the computer's interface and the .ISO file will start copying your memory stick. Allow copying to finish and eject your USB stick from your computer before removing it.

Tips

Make sure that your USB stick has enough free space for you to copy the .ISO image of your PS2 game or else copying will fail.

Warnings

Do not make illegal copies of PlayStation 2 games. Backup copies are for archival purposes only.
