If you mount your television on the wall above your fireplace, you'll want to run the audio-video wires through the wall around the mantle for a clean installation. If the TV covers the width of the fireplace, the wires can extend unobtrusively from the wall to the jacks on the rear of the television. Getting the wires inside the wall requires a fish tape tool, which is a flexible strip of coiled metal that becomes rigid when uncoiled. The fish tape pushes through the wall interior to run cables and wiring.
Things You'll Need
- Cordless drill and bits
- Fish tape
- Audi-video components
Turn off the circuit breaker that controls the electricity to the room where the fireplace is.
Bore two half-inch-diameter holes in the wall near the fireplace with the cordless drill where you want the AV wiring to connect with a TV and to an AV receiver or other home theater equipment. One hole will typically be along the edge of the fireplace at the height of the TV. The second hole will be closer to the ground, such as behind a media cabinet holding the electronic components that connect to the TV.
Insert the end of the fish tape into the top hole and guide it into the wall toward the bottom hole.
Pull out the metal tape through the bottom hole and attach the AV wiring to the hook on the end. Push the end of the tape with the attached wiring back into the wall.
Pull the tape from the first hole to remove the tool from the wall, carrying the wiring along with it to the first hole. Extract the tool from the wall, pull out the wiring and detach from the hook on the end. You can now connect the exposed ends of the AV wiring to your equipment, with the remainder of the wiring hidden behind the wall.
Tips & Warnings
- Do not restore the electricity to the room until all tools are out of the wall.
