How to Use Mylands Cellulose Sanding Sealers

Save

Mylands cellulose sanding sealer is a lacquer-based wood sealer used as a pre-finishing product. It fills the pores of the wood and raises the wood grain. This creates a hard surface that you can sand smooth in preparation for the finish of your choice. Mylands contains no petroleum solvents, unlike shellac-based sealers. This greatly reduces drying times, allowing you to begin finishing your wood -- whether it's a guitar or a piece of furniture -- more quickly.

Things You'll Need

  • Paintbrushes
  • Clean cloths
  • Paint pail
  • Fine-grit sandpaper
  • No. 0000 steel wool
  • Go over the object that you’re sealing with a brush to avoid sealing dust into the finish. Concentrate on joint edges, crevices and other detail areas where dust might accumulate. Go over the surface a second time with a clean cloth to remove any dust missed by the brush.

  • Shake the unopened can of sealer briskly to mix the contents. Open the can and pour a small amount of sealer into a paint pail.

  • Apply the Mylands cellulose sanding sealer to the object, using a small paintbrush, beginning with detail sections and small flat areas. Keep your application thin. Switch to a medium-size paintbrush for larger areas, working in rows that overlap at the edges to avoid sealer buildup. Let the sealer dry for an hour.

  • Go over the sealed surface, using fine-grit sandpaper and working along with the grain of the wood. Use No. 0000 steel wool to sand detail areas that may be hard to reach with the sandpaper. Remove the residue left from sanding, using the small dust removal brush, and then wipe with a clean cloth.

  • Apply a second coat of sealer the same way you applied the first coat. Sand and dust the second coat, and then apply a third coat. Allow the piece to dry before you use it.
