How to Teach in Urban Schools

Save

Teaching students in an urban setting comes with a set of obstacles and difficulties that are not present in many other schools. Some of these problems include poverty, lack of parental support, drugs and violence. Nonetheless, there are several strategies that can be employed by most teachers that will increase their teaching efficiency and maximize their positive impact on student's lives.

  • Be sympathetic to the problems and issues with which your students are faced. It's extremely important to not pass judgment on your students but instead remain understanding and help them whenever you can.

  • Assert yourself and do not allow your students to show you disrespect. Many students will test their teachers at first to see what behavior they can get away with. This is why it's important to remain fair but not allow students to engage in improper behavior. If they do misbehave, they should be punished appropriately according to school policy.

  • Practice patience and try to keep your cool at all times. It's only natural that your patience will be tested and that you will be under a moderate level of stress. Try to maintain objectivity and do not allow yourself to become rattled when you become frustrated.

  • Show all students respect and avoid favoritism. Many children from urban settings are quick to react negatively when they feel that they have been disrespected. Therefore you should always teach with utmost professionalism and be equally kind to all students.

  • Listen to the input of every student. Many kids simply need an adult to listen to any problems that they are going through. Doing this can quickly earn you the respect and trust of your students, which will form a solid rapport.

Tips & Warnings
