How to Teach How to Write a Bibliography
When students receive an essay or research paper assignment, including a bibliography is also a requirement. As students write a research paper, they use sources for information. Teach students that a bibliography includes these information sources in order to show readers where the author found information. Readers can then check the sources in the bibliography to ensure that the sources are credible and that the writing assignment is original work.

Give students a brief overview of a bibliography, including its purpose and its formatting. Instruct students to compile a bibliography as separate to the writing assignment with the title of "Bibliography" at the top of the page. Explain that a bibliography contains a list of each source that an author used to write an essay or research paper.

Encourage students to keep a list of each source they use in writing their paper. Students need to know the author names, book or article titles, publisher name and location and publication date for each source.

Instruct students to include sources in a bibliography in alphabetical order using the author's last name first in each entry. If an author's name is not available -- for encyclopedia or text book sources, for example -- begin the entry with the title of the article.

Give an example of a bibliography for students to follow, including the following examples in alphabetical order. Book entry: author, book title, publisher, city of publisher, and date of publication. Encyclopedia entry: encyclopedia, volume, edition date, title of article and page numbers. Magazine entry: author, article title, magazine name, volume date and page numbers. Newspaper entry: author, article title, newspaper name, newspaper location, section and page numbers. Interview: name, occupation and date of the interview. Internet: URL, author and date.
