Instructions

    • 1

Spread newspapers out on a table of other sturdy work surface. Tilt the pot containing the asparagus plant over on its side on top of the newspaper. Grasp the base of the plant and pull it sideways to remove the roots from the pot.

    • 2

Brush away most of the soil from the roots so that you can see the tubers, which look similar to tiny potatoes.

    • 3

Spread the root-ball out using your fingers and then gently untangle the top leaves of the plant until they are directly above the tuber they are attached to.

    • 4

Pull each tuber and its corresponding leaves away from the other roots to divide them. Repeat the process to divide all remaining tubers until they are all separate.

    • 5

Fill 8- to 10-inch diameter plant pots three-fourths of the way with an all-purpose potting soil.

    • 6

Lay one tuber on the top of the soil in each pot. Fill the pot with additional soil until the tuber is covered, but the leafy frond is completely above the soil line.

    • 7

Water the pot until the soil is wet all the way to the bottom. Place the pots near a window that receives bright light but no direct sun.
