How to Become an LAPD SWAT
Dispatched to serious public safety situations, Special Weapons and Tactics police units utilize specialized training and equipment to defuse danger and minimize risk to the public. The Los Angeles Police Department first formed a SWAT division in 1967. Reasons for first responder law enforcement requesting SWAT include barricade or hostage situations and threats to public safety. Individuals wishing to serve as SWAT officer for LAPD must receive an internal promotion.

Qualify to join the LAPD as a Police Officer I. Successful police officer candidates must be at least 21 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, meet citizenship criteria and pass an extensive background check.

Submit to the application process, which includes many steps including application, essay, fitness evaluation and interview. Passage of the application process only certifies a candidate as eligible for hire.

Complete the LAPD academy. Candidates who pass academy and become police officers serve a one-year probationary period during which they complete field training.
Joining SWAT

Successfully complete probationary periods and trainings to advance to Police Officer III. Police Officer Is receive automatic promotions to Police Officer II after passing 18-months probation. Officers become Police Officer IIIs after three years at the Police Officer II level.

Qualify to join the Metropolitan Division, which houses the SWAT unit. The Metro Division considers internal applicants with high ratings and at least four years of service. Applicants must also submit to rigorous fitness testing.

Complete specialized trainings as an officer within the Metro Division. Internal applicants selected to the division undergo training in various areas.

Apply for SWAT opportunities within the Metro Division.
