How to Learn English Personalities & Moods

How to Learn English Personalities & Moods thumbnail
Understanding any culture requires a certain amount of immersion into the culture itself.

For those who are trying to learn British English, one of the most difficult parts of the process is understanding the many moods and personalities of those who live in the UK. British culture is unique and full of history, and learning the quirks of the British through a textbook can be next to impossible. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to better immerse yourself in British culture and increase your understanding of the people of England.

Instructions

    • 1

Watch as many British movies as possible. Studying film is one of the best ways to learn the moods and personalities of any culture since it allows you to observe conversations and other cultural signifiers at length. Even though films are generally comprised of acting (save for documentaries and similar genres), the personalities of those on screen are often reflective of the culture itself.

    • 2

Take a class on British culture. The history of Britain and her people is well-documented and taught in a variety of different educational settings. Knowing a good deal about the history of the UK will help you to better understand the people that live there and their personalities.

    • 3

Travel to Britain and engage in conversation with the locals. While it helps to do your research beforehand, there is simply no better way to learn a culture than to immerse yourself in it completely. By eating at British restaurants, visiting museums and learning the pace of local life, you can walk away with a sense of understanding far deeper than one could ever gain simply from taking a class or reading a textbook.

Tips & Warnings

  • The British are known for their distinctly dry sense of humor. Exposing yourself to British comedy is a great way to gain a better understanding of the personalities and moods commonly found in the UK.

  • Traveling to a foreign country without adequate preparation is dangerous. Always travel with a partner or do your research beforehand.
